BBC History Magazine Illustration

Illustration

Watercolour, coloured pencils

Date

April 2024

I was commissioned to create an illustration for The BBC History Magazine, depicting the 1879 pacific war between Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. Inspired by Inca designs, I incorporated a weaving cloth pattern that connects the heritage of all three countries, as they once belonged to the Inca Empire. It also represents the fallen native South American soldiers who were sent to the front lines and were the biggest casualties. The pattern depicts the war soldiers from each side and the naval army. It was done with pencils and watercolours to recreate that wool cloth look.
