The Tokyo Express book illustrations is a recent project that I completed, inspired by Sumi-E and Ukiyo-e Japanese styles. Using watercolors and ink, I created illustrations for a Japanese crime fiction classic by Seichou Matsumoto. The story follows two detectives as they try to unravel a seemingly perfect alibi tightly connected to train times and unreliable witnesses. The black ink was perfect to captivate the mystery and darkness of this story set on the post-war 50's Japan.
